No-exam life insurance

Which applicants qualify for accelerated underwriting, how it actually works, and what to expect if you don't qualify.

Many carriers now offer accelerated underwriting: for applicants within their age and benefit limits, they decide based on your application, prescription records, driving history, and other databases instead of a medical exam. Approvals can take hours rather than weeks. Every quote on this site tells you whether an exam is required, possible, or unnecessary for that specific offer.

What it changes

Skipping an exam doesn't mean skipping underwriting checks. Your answers get verified, and policies issued on false information can be challenged during the first two years. If the carrier finds something worth investigating through their data sources, they may still order an exam or tests; you then decide if you want to proceed.

Who tends to qualify

Usually people under roughly 60 who apply for amounts up to the carrier's limit, with no significant health history and no tobacco use for at least a year. If you've had recent bloodwork through a doctor visit, some carriers will accept those results instead of requiring a new exam.

When an exam is needed, you'll typically have a paramedical examiner come to your Porterville home or workplace for a 20- to 30-minute appointment at no charge to you. For healthy applicants, exam results frequently lead to a better rate class, so the exam can actually work in your favor rather than against you.
